< 30 v > 30: match report

13 June 2005 - 5:25pm -- Joseph

We had an under thirties vs. over thirties football match on saturday, as party of my thirtieth birthday party. I played for the over-thirties, (although I'm not actually thirty until Thursday - hopefully this will be the last time I have to lie about my age...)

The turnout was pretty good, though we didn't quite have enough for eleven-a-side, so we had nine v. nine on a full size pitch, in the midday sun. It was tough going...

The game started out pretty even, before the experience of the >30 began to tell, opening up the <30 defence and building a 3-0 lead at half-time, courtesy of goals from Dave Bannerman and Nanu.

The <30 staged a spirited fight-back after the break, (no doubt buoyed by the half-time oranges and vocal support from the crowd) but their resolve was broken by a cracking goal by Francisco after a seering run down the right.

Tom Jenkins pulled one back for the <30, before yours truly missed an absolutely golden opportunity to get myself on the scoresheet (yes, it was an absolute sitter, though subsequent rumours of it hitting the corner-flag are entirely unfounded exaggerations...)

So, 4-1 to the >30's, a satisfactory result as far as I'm concerned, clearly my best years are still ahead of me (they better be...)

Thanks to everyone who turned up to play, cheer, or jeer at my glaring misses...
