Why accusations of 'BBC left-wing bias' are bollocks

12 May 2015 - 6:41pm -- Joseph

Right, a quick word on this 'BBC left-wing bias', if I may...

The BBC does not have a left-wing bias. I've heard that the BBC tends to have a slight bias of sympathy towards current governments. Sorry, can't corroborate that, forgot where I heard it.  Certainly I found it to be true over the last five years.  I felt the BBC was too accepting of the government line and slowly stopped going to the BBC as a source of news as a result (that and the yellow redesign of the football pages that I just couldn't get on with).

Problem with Google indexing a site on Wordpress.com

4 November 2013 - 9:07pm -- Joseph

Recently I've been assiting a couple of academics with their project website Re-imagining Democracy. Obviously most clients I work with are keen to ensure their sites are well ranked in Google and other search engines and this project is no exception.  The site is a hosted Wordpress site on Wordpress.com and we have set it to allow search engines to crawl, but it doesn't seem to be getting indexed by Google.  If I do a literal string search for a passage within the site (e.g.

New paintings!

29 April 2013 - 12:26pm -- Joseph

I've been working on a set of three paintings, which is a sort of commision for my sister (she asked for a painting for her birthday, I thought I'd do three so she could choose the one she liked the best and to leave me some room for experimentation). I ended up doing a kinda 'weird fishes' thing. They're now up in paintings.

She picked Weird Fishes 1, by the way...

Excluding hidden svn metadata files when zipping up a directory

19 April 2013 - 9:50am -- Joseph

Ever wondered how to exclude .svn files from a directory you want to zip? My colleague just showed me this command (thanks James!), which I record here for future reference:

zip myzipfile.zip -r mydirectory/ -x \*.svn\*

Yes, I know I could export from the repository:

svn export directory ~/svn-exports/new-directory

but it's useful to know another method.

Wireless audio - how to?

3 February 2013 - 8:52pm -- Joseph

I'm trying to improve the audio set-up in our house and cut down on the number of wires and cables trailing about the place. I'm trying to sort out some sort of wireless audio system (y'know, the typical geeky bloke dream of seamless music throughout the house.) I could buy one of those systems that seems to promise the earth like Sonos (which sounds pretty good), but to be honest I'm pretty close to having the set-up I want.
