Switching over to Firefox and Thunderbird

24 January 2005 - 8:02pm -- Joseph

I installed the Mozilla browser and mail client for my parents this weekend. I've been using Mozilla as my main browser at work for sometime, but haven't used just Firefox, because the tabbed browsing doesn't behave as I'd wish. Similarly, I'd not switched my email to Thunderbird because you can't just add a sender of a message to your address book by right-clicking (which I can do in Eudora).

However, while installing Firefox and Thunderbird at my parents, I got looking at the extensions available for both. I'd never really paid much attention to extensions before. Silly really because, duh, there are extensions to extend tabbed browsing in Firefox and add addressbook functions to the contextual menus in Thunderbird.

So I've switched over to Firefox and Thunderbird at work today, which has been easy, and now my machine runs faster - yay!

Below are direct links to the extensions files I used (i.e. you'll need to right-click and save link target):
thunderbird addressbook context menu extension

firefox tabbed browsing extension

dictionary search extension for Thunderbird

right-click and select 'Save link as...'
